Why People Do Bad Things

Yesterday's shooting at a Connecticut elementary school has the nation in a state of mourning and shock. How could anyone commit such a heinous act?

As we all hug our children a little tighter today, it makes me wonder why such evil exists in the world and why shooting rampages like this are becoming more frequent.

Try to explain to a child why people do bad things and you can feel a bit at a loss for words.

Religious beliefs aside, what explanation is there for the evil in this world? It is hard at times to have hope that goodness can exist when there is such darkness.

The shooter who committed these crimes was obviously not "right" in his head. How could he have been? The issue of how he was able to get access to weapons to carry out his sick plan is something we need to explore and hopefully make changes to.

So now we recover from the shock of what has occurred and we move forward.

The challenge is to not allow fear to dictate our lives.

Movie theaters, malls and now elementary schools. Is anyplace safe anymore?

The truth is that no one knows where evil might happen. We cannot live our lives in fear of the unknown.

This is a lesson to live every moment as if it was your last. Life is a gift- that is why it is called the present.
